Turkey was pleased to observe Brussels take the first step to give momentum its relations with the EU, prior to Ireland’s term presidency to begin in January.

The EU foreign ministers have approved of the Turkey paragraph of the enlargement decisions in their meeting in Brussels. It was noted that the word ” accession ” had been used for the first time in five years.

EU have much space to Turkey in the enlargement decisions the EU leaders will give approval to at their summit in Brussels on December 13-14th.

It is observed that the enlargement decisions stress Turkey’s dynamic economy and strategic position, qualifying Turkey as a key partner of the EU. Earlier, Turkey was even denied the word accession in concerned texts, simply because the former French President Sarkozy had objections.

Current decisions taken by EU express that it is in the best interests of both sides to have the membership negotiations resumed and that membership negotiations may well be speeded up provided that Ankara fulfills the criteria and its responsibilities.

In the text prepared by EU Turkey’s economic performance is praised and EU’s solid support for Turkey in its fight against terrorism is reaffirmed.
