What happened to Turkey’s “Worthy Solitude”

ERDOGAN-DAVUTHeaded by the over-ambitious leader of AK PARTI as the Prime Minister of the country, Turkey made the fatal mistake of considering itself as undisputed “number one” regional power in the Middle east and even MENA region.

Furthermore, the country whose foreign policy has been shaped by  Foreign Minister DAVUTOĞLU with illusions of reviving the once almighty Ottoman Empire, found itself in turmoil of conflicts with its neighbors. The FM who had once declared Turkey would be a country with zero problems with its neighbors now seems to be in the center of a chaos consisting of conflicts with Syria, Egypt, Iraq and even Russia at times.

In other words most experts and unbiased opinion leaders comment that the foreign policy strategies implemented and followed by DAVUTOĞLU are a true failure..

The funny thing (or rather dramatic perhaps) is that this “undesired situation” Turkey has entangled itself in, was described by some Turkish officials as “Worthy Solitude” a while ago.

The worse part however is that the head of government does not seem to be aware of the disturbingly isolated position Turkey has been in for a while now, because he has not yet given signals that he has comprehended the graveness of the current stance and is ready to back off, not to put the country even in a worse position.

If we look at Iran on the other hand for example which everybody thought faced a very likely intervention by the USA and allies because the Western World did not wish to allow this country to possess nuclear facilities, we will see a great success achieved by Iranian state officials. The reason is Iran has managed to explain and in a way convince its opponents that it should be granted the right to work on nuclear power and thus integrated itself into the western world system again.

Now, Iran is many steps in a better position than Turkey as compared to the situation at the beginning of this conflict.

We only hope this performance displayed by Turkey’s most important neighbor could become a good example and lesson for the Turkish officials responsible for shaping the foreign policy of the country, before Turkey Turkey loses more ground in the Middle East and East Mediterranean and finds itself in a position where it has to suffer greater damage in terms of its benefits concerning foreign affairs
