Turkish parliament to work on proposal for new constitution

A proposal presented to the Turkish parliament by Ak Party is destined to be the focus of politics during the coming days.

Included in the proposal is the chapter covering a proposal for amending the current presidential  system.

The deputies are expected to debate  presidential, semi-presidential and parliamentary systems during talks at the Turkish parliament.

It has been reported that Mehmet Ali Şahin, Ahmet İyimaya and Mustafa Şentop – deputies representing AK Party at the Constitutional Consensus Commission at the Turkish Parliament  – have completed their works on the chapter of legislation and a proposal with 22 articles on the creation of a presidential system has been presented to the parliament by the Justice and Development Party.

Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) are expected make their offers tomorrow.

Currently, the Turkish president is considered to be more like a ceremonial figure and the ruling AK Party suggests to bring a new system where an the president is much stronger with more executive power, as part of a reform process.
