Putin makes important statements after meeting in Istanbul

Russian President Vladimir Putin has paid a visit to Turkey on which occasion several agreements have been concluded and signed between two countries.

In the press conference after his meeting with Prime Minister Erdoğan Russian Head of State has made some important statements.
After the meeting that was held on December 12th Putin said Russia’s stance towards Syria crisis was similar to Turkey stance.

Putin went on to say “However, there are differences regarding the method to establish the peace and a stable administration. We have developed new ideas during our meeting with Turkish premier on which we will work.”

Putin also referred to casualties at the Syrian Turkish border and said “We cannot ignore the shelling of a country’s territory. Turkey and Russia are neighbors who have great responsibilities. We will continue to consult with our Turkish friends.”

One of the most interesting remarks made by Putin was when he responded to a question over deployment of Patriot missiles along Turkey’s border with Syria. The head of state explained that Russia understood Turkey’s concerns along its borders, however deploying Patriot missiles was not the model they would prefer” and he went on to say “There were no nuclear weapons in Syria”.

Another interesting remark from Putin was “We do not protect the regime in Syria. We are not their advocate”.

In regards to cooperation between two countries Putin said Russia was one of Turkey’s most important trade partners and the trade volume between Turkey and Russia had gone up by 20 percent in 2011. The head of state also said both partners targeted to increase said trade volume to 100 billion USD.

Referrring to Turkey’s first nuclear power plant to be built by his country, he said Russia would meet 20 billion USD which was the investment volume in question.
