Prosecutor accuses football fan group of attempting coup against government

CARSI-GEZI35 members of the Çarşı fan group of Beşiktaş football team have been charged with over attempting a coup against the AKP government during the June 2013 Gezi Park protests with the demand of aggravated life sentences.

The indictment which was accepted by the court demands aggravated life sentence for 35 fans for using violence to stage a coup. Hundreds of fans have poured into the streets to protest the trial and the AKP government, shouting slogans as: “To hell with your indictment” and “If Çarşı is an illegal organization, then we are its militants.”

It was suggested in the indictment that some marginal groups, such as Çarşı, provoked people in Gezi Park protests to revolt against the AKP government. Moreover, Beşiktaş fans are accused of attempting to occupy the Prime Minister’s Office to create an authority gap.

Çarşı supporters group is known for taking part plenty of social responsibility projects, such as the search and rescue after the Van earthquake, blood donations to the Red Crescent, building hospitals for children with leukemia, shelters for street animals and so many other social projects.
