Four locations in the Şemdinli district of southeastern Hakkari province came under simultaneous attacks by alleged members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, on Sunday night.

PKK militants attacked Şemdinli’s District Police Headquarters, District Gendarmerie Command, Mountaineer Commando Brigade and its personnel housing buildings with heavy weaponry and rocket launchers at around 10 p.m.

Intense clashes broke out when soldiers responded to the attack, which lasted for three hours.

The statement from Hakkari Governor’s Office said one soldier and one police officer were killed in the attack. Three civilians who were caught in the crossfire between militants and soldiers were also killed, the statement said.

Six soldiers and six civilians were injured in the firefight, while two PKK members were killed, the statement added.

The bodies of the two PKK members could be retrieved only after disabling explosive devices attached to their bodies, according to the statement from Governor’s Office.

The PKK is recognized as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
