Australian PM Gillard in Turkey to discuss anniversary preparations

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard arrived in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Thursday in order to discuss the preparations for the 100th anniversary commemorations of the Canakkale Campaign in 2015.

ANKARA- Gillard will be received by President Abdullah Gul and meet Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and will discuss preparations for the 100th anniversary commemorations of the Canakkale Campaign in 2015.

The Australian prime minister is expected to depart from Turkey in the evening following her talks in the Turkish capital.

Gillard arrived in Turkey’s northwestern province of Canakkale on Tuesday to attend ceremonies to commemorate Australian soldiers who fell during the 1915 Canakkale Campaign of the First World War.

Julia Gillard participated in a ceremony at dawn on Wednesday at the Gelibolu Peninsula where ANZAC first set foot 97 years ago with thousands of Australians and New Zealanders to pay their respects to their ancestors who lost their lives in the battlefields of Canakkale.
